Time to Improve My Handwriting

I've decided that I just can't live with my handwriting anymore. My new job involves printing patient names on the daily schedule and on the treatment pages of their charts. I also have to create legible notes for the other Receptionist and record any messages for the chiropractors.

I know my printing is legible, but it's not pretty at all. I have decided that I will leave 'looped-cursive' alone for now and try out the new/old style of writing called Italic. It's been around for hundreds of years so it can't be all bad. :) I find it to be a very clear easy to read script and hopefully I can re-train my hand to write it. Anything has to be better than my current mix between printing and cursive (some letters joined some not, some cursive some printed).

The book I chose to help me change my handwriting, Write Now, suggested I create a sample of my writing 'now' to look back on. I've printed the sample. I don't dare show my script, I don't think it has changed at all since I learned it when I was 9. There is something sad about being my age and writing like a 9 yr old. That is something I hope to change.

Reliving my Childhood and Great Bookstore

I may have mentioned before that my son *loves* books. He will bring me book after book after book to read to him for as long as my voice holds out for. I have encouraged this as it is suppose to help improve his vocabulary and indicates that he might be a big reader himself when he gets older. Also, I love reading all the books I read and had read to me as a child; Dr. Seuss, Robert Munch, Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik, all those good books!

Now that he is getting a bit older we have been able to broaden our horizons a bit. He is able to imagine the pictures in his head and doesn't always need to see a picture on the page. He won't listen to a story with no pictures for very long, but we have managed to get through "the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" as well as "Prince Caspian." The eBook versions of these stories have 2 or 3 pictures for each chapter and that helps him to connect with the characters and keeps his interest for the parts which don't have pictures. This is a good thing as he can't read or colour in the car without getting an upset tummy. Audiobooks come to the rescue, he will happily listen to Dr. Suess or Narnia or "Magic Treehouse" until we reach our destination, and I still have a voice when we arrive. :)

He constantly brings home non-fiction books from the library, especially ones about dinosaurs, but also likes books about magic and anything about super heros. With this in mind I have just taken possession of 5/8 "Young Wizard" books by Diane Duane. They are currently only available as paper and audio books, but Diane says: "Ebook editions are definitely in the works for this year. Just not sure of what the exact timing's supposed to be." Even though I already own all the YW audiobooks and will soon own all the paperback versions as well, I know I will be purchasing the eBook versions just as soon as they hit the virtual shelves. :D

I must say I am pretty pleased with the price I paid for these books. I found an online shop called "BookCloseOuts.com" and managed to scoop all 5 of these books for $1.74 US each!!! can you believe it? That is practically free! You have to check out this store! LibraryThing - Advanced Reading Copy Received!!!

LibraryThing recently started a section where members can give away books. "Member Giveaways are an informal way for authors or members to giveaway books in exchange for reviews." Every now and then I go through the list and click on the ones that look good. Today I got one in the mail!!! I received an Advanced Reading Copy of Pureheart by Rita Hsu Syers, this book isn't due to be released until June 1, 2009!!!

I will be putting away my Cybook and my BeBook to actually read a dead-tree hard cover book . It looks like an interesting read, the book description is:

LibraryThing Early Review Book Received!!!

I'm in total shock!!! Every month I faithfully go to the Early Review section of LibraryThing and make my picks of books I would like to read and review. I have traditionally been unfazed by not being picked to receive any books. This time it was different!!! I went to my mailbox this morning and there was a parcel for me from an address I didn't recognize. When I opened it up I found a brand new, hardcover copy of Free Range Knitter by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee!!!! *Squeeee* I love the Yarn Harlot's books!!! I'm so thrilled to get this book from her publisher. All I have to do is read the book and then email the publisher with my review. Somehow I don't think that will be hard to do.

I will be putting away my Cybook and actually reading a dead-tree book for the first time in ages. It will be worth it however to read the words of the Yarn Harlot again. I have followed her knitting blog for a while and love the way she writes!
